Build your story. Bring your idea to life. Reach more people. Hi, Reader, Lots has been happening on the writing front lately -- mostly with my stellar clients who are working on important and creative projects. I LOVE coming alongside people to help them clarify and find the true power in their stories. Hope. Leadership. Resiliency after staggering loss. Appreciating the past for what it can teach us about the present. These are all loose themes around projects to which my clients are giving 110-percent effort. Seeing the creative process at work is nothing short of amazing, ever. The muse shows up - sometimes so unexpectedly - and even when it doesn't, stories materialize, because they must. "I can shake off everything as I write," said Anne Frank. "My sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn." A member of a writing group I used to belong to once said, "I think so often stories have to be told because they just gnaw at you." What is gnawing at you right now? How will you acknowledge it? When will you say, "yes?" -Kate
Stories are all around us. We hear them. We read them. We tell them. Have you ever thought about exploring your past, resurrecting childhood memories or bringing your family history to life? On May 31, I'll host a one-hour writing workshop, "Telling Our Life Stories." Together, we’ll explore the power of story, learn how to preserve and share memories of the past and think critically about why stories matter. We tell stories for many reasons. From this webinar, you'll walk away with the tools and the game plan you need to bring your story to life. DATE: Saturday, May 31, 2025 TIME: 9 a.m. MT (11 a.m. ET) COST: $15 Learn more and register here. You will receive the Zoom link upon registering and reminder emails leading up to the event.
This spring, I had the privilege of leading a writing workshop for teens in a historic library in south-central South Dakota. About 15 young women and men gathered at tables arranged in the shape of a horseshoe, and we talked about the elements of story and what every good story needs. Students spent quiet time writing - working on their own creative projects - and they asked excellent questions about the writing process. Do you know a teen who would be interested in a virtual weekly summer writing workshop? In the Teen Summer Writing Workshop, we'll gather on Zoom once a week to talk about one specific element of storytelling (plot, conflict, setting, etc.) and we'll spend quality time writing. Participants will have the opportunity to complete at least one short story over the summer or draft at least five chapters of a book. Learn more and register here!
Get your writing done in these regularly scheduled virtual work sessions! We gather on Zoom on the first Wednesday and third Thursday of the month. We spend 5-10 minutes talking about our writing projects and what we’re working on, and then we’ll get to the actual work of writing! The idea behind a write-in is that it provides structure and accountability for a craft that is all-too-often lonely and lacking in peer support. We’ll write for an hour or so, and then reconvene for a quick de-brief. Participate in one or both monthly sessions – come when you can! UPCOMING SESSIONS: May 7 @ 11 a.m. MT (1 p.m. ET) May 15 @ 2 p.m. MT (4 p.m. ET) Click here for the Zoom link and to receive monthly reminders.

What is Accountability Worth to You?Recently, I shared a survey link with my newsletter subscribers, to get a feel for how or whether people value accountability to their writing craft. Would anyone be interested in being part of a writing accountability group? Is a virtual community built around group coaching and quiet writing time something people would be willing to pay for? I have hosted a free hour-long Write-In on Zoom twice a month for almost two years now. Nearly 100 people have signed up to receive reminders of these free writing events, and a few of us gather at every session. There are the familiar faces, and often, people hop on for the first time, eager to see what an hour of dedicated writing time might produce for them. Everyone shares a specific writing goal for the session, and then I set a timer and we write for a solid 45-50 minutes. At the end, we reconvene and writers have an opportunity to share any insights that came out of their writing session. Over time, I’ve watched writers of all levels make incredible strides in their projects. The breakthroughs they’ve had—whether it’s pushing through writer’s block, achieving a personal word count goal, or simply finding their creative flow—have been nothing short of remarkable. The feedback I’ve received from participants reflects not only the power of these group sessions but also the sense of connection and motivation that comes from writing alongside others.
